It began in Zimbabwe in 1982 when commercial farmer, Brian Oldreive, found himself under increasing financial pressure due to a decline in yields, caused by the conventional farming methods he was using. Brian began to observe nature’s way of growing things and applied it to growing crops so beginning to use Zero-Tillage methods on a small section of land.

There was an immediate increase in yields and margins each year thereafter. Within six years all 1,000 ha were being farmed using this method and became so profitable that neighbouring farms were also purchased, bringing the net cropping area to 3,500 hectares. Brian began to reach out to neighbouring small-scale farmers, teaching them also to make a margin. Many challenges followed as he tried to teach others, but during this time God began to reveal more principles, a management system and keys for improved margin.

Craig Deall, a commercial farmer from Zimbabwe is a casualty of the government’s controversial land grab. After losing his farm in 2003, God took him and his wife Bridget on a remarkable road of forgiveness where he has been able move on and dedicate the rest of his life to the vision of Foundations for Farming standing along side Brian Oldreive as they tackle the problem of poverty and dependency in Africa.
